The final phase of the Electric Train Service 3 (ETS3) to JB Sentral in Johor is expected to be operational by December this year. According to recent updates, the physical construction of the project has been completed, with only the finalization of the signalling system remaining.
While the ETS3 service has already extended to Kluang and is set to begin operations on August 30, authorities remain focused on ensuring the full extension to JB Sentral is completed before the end of the year. Currently, all track and infrastructure work is done, and only the signalling components are pending completion.
The ETS3 project has been progressing in phases. The first phase, connecting Gemas in Negeri Sembilan to Segamat in Johor, is already in operation. The second phase, extending to Kluang, is scheduled to begin service on August 30. The transport ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitoring all infrastructure projects under its jurisdiction to ensure they are completed according to schedule.
This ETS extension to Johor Bahru is considered a significant milestone for the transport sector this year. Once fully operational, the service will also support other government initiatives, such as the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system at the Malaysia-Singapore border, aimed at improving cross-border traffic management.
The upcoming ETS3 service for the southern route will run between KL Sentral and Kluang, with service beginning at the end of August. Tickets for this new service are available through mobile applications, self-service kiosks, and the official website of the rail operator.
Technical testing is ongoing for the first two sets of Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains that have already arrived in Malaysia. If the tests proceed smoothly, they will be ready for passenger service by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, the remaining eight EMU train sets are being assembled in stages at a manufacturing facility in Batu Gajah, Perak. The full fleet of ten ETS3 train sets is expected to be fully operational by early 2026.
