The Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) project, connecting Bandar Utama to Johan Setia, is reportedly facing delays, pushing back its expected launch date. Initially slated to begin operations on September 30, 2025, the service may not be ready until at least October. As of late July, the project is still undergoing 24-hour train testing and commissioning along the stretch from Bandar Utama to Johan Setia. However, it is unclear how much longer these tests will continue, and netizens have pointed out that an earlier version of the post on LRT3's Facebook page mentioned a deadline of October 31, 2025, indicating a potential month-long delay from the original target.

The LRT3 project, which began in 2016, has been a long-awaited addition to Malaysia's public transport system. Originally planned to include 26 stations, this was later revised to 20, with key interchange stations at Bandar Utama (connecting to the MRT Kajang Line) and Glenmarie (linking to the LRT Kelana Jaya Line). As of July 2025, the project was reportedly 99.21% complete. Despite this progress, delays have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted construction schedules and supply chains, as well as issues like labor shortages and limited availability of construction materials.

The project’s cost has also evolved over time. Initially approved at RM31.65 billion in 2015, the cost was later reduced to RM16.63 billion in 2018 following a restructuring process. However, in 2024, the government decided to reinstate part of the project’s original scope, adding five more stations, extra train sets, additional depots, and new electric feeder buses. This brought the total project cost to RM21.93 billion.

When completed, the LRT3 line is expected to significantly improve connectivity, especially for high-density areas like Bandar Utama, Shah Alam, and Klang. The service is projected to accommodate up to 18,630 passengers per hour in each direction, benefiting an estimated two million residents. The line is hoped to reduce traffic congestion and stimulate economic growth, particularly in areas along its route.

Despite the ongoing delays, the government and Prasarana are committed to ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of the project, although the exact timeline for the launch remains uncertain.
