Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has launched the LRT3 Shah Alam line on 28 June 2026 and operations began on 29 June. He announced that commuters can ride the newly launched LRT3 Shah Alam Line and its accompanying feeder bus services for free for one month, from June 29 to July 31. This initiative aims to encourage more people to utilize public transport on one of the country’s busiest corridors.
The decision followed discussions between the Transport Ministry and the Finance Ministry. While acknowledging the upfront costs associated with providing free rides, the long-term benefits—such as reduced traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, decreased fuel consumption, and improved economic productivity—far outweigh the expenditure. Public transport infrastructure should be evaluated by its broader environmental and socio-economic impacts rather than just initial costs.
Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) expects between 5,000 and 10,000 passengers on the first day of operation, with a target of reaching 67,000 daily riders within the first year as the public becomes accustomed to the new route.
Currently, trains are running at a frequency of about eight minutes during peak hours. Current focus is on enhancing the user experience by monitoring passenger flow and ensuring the smooth operation of automated gates and ticketing machines. While there are no immediate plans for specialized features like women-only coaches, the operator will continue to monitor ridership data at key interchange stations, such as Glenmarie 2 and Bandar Utama, to adjust train frequency or deploy standby trains if demand necessitates it.
The launch serves as a significant milestone in providing commuters with an efficient, affordable alternative to driving through heavy traffic, ultimately aiming to improve the overall efficiency of the region's transport system.
