Area Profile
Description of the areas served by the Station
Merdeka MRT mainly serves an area known as Petaling Hill, home to iconic landmarks such as prominent stadiums and well-known educational institutions. Merdeka MRT's name in itself was derived from Stadium Merdeka located on this hill. Overlooking busy streets like Jalan Maharajalela, Jalan Hang Tuah, Jalan Hang Jebat, and Petaling Street, Petaling Hill blends green spaces with a concrete cityscape.
For over a century, this sloped area has played an important role for the surrounding communities, although much of its historical significance remains underdocumented. Understanding Petaling Hill’s importance requires looking at its key landmarks, some of which have disappeared while others remain today. Victoria Institution, founded in 1893, moved to Petaling Hill in 1926 from its original location at Jalan Tun H S Lee after the land was repurposed. By the early 1900s, the nearby Methodist Boys' School Kuala Lumpur, formerly Anglo-Tamil School, had already established itself in the area, roughly 500-600 meters away from Victoria Institution.
In 1937, part of Petaling Hill became Coronation Park, a public recreation area honoring British King George VI. This park was also the birthplace of the term "People’s Park," part of an effort to reserve large green spaces within the city as a counterbalance to rapid urbanization. Petaling Hill continued to develop post-World War II, with Chin Woo Stadium constructed in the 1950s, followed by the creation of Stadium Merdeka, Merdeka Park (now the site of PNB’s Merdeka 118), and Stadium Negara in the 1960s. The park itself was a popular site for public events, including concerts and school performances, fulfilling its role as a community gathering place.
Merdeka 118, slated to be the second tallest building in the world, rises 679 meters high, its spire proudly reaching upwards. This towering structure reflects not only remarkable engineering but also the rich history and cultural significance of its location. From the outset, investor Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) Merdeka Ventures saw the potential of the site and envisioned Merdeka 118 as a ‘global icon,’ drawing tourists from around the world while also benefiting the local community. Designed by the renowned Australian architectural firm Fender Katsalidis, with the collaboration of several local and international firms, this monumental project came to life. Merdeka 118 is part of a much larger development but stands as its centerpiece, drawing focus as the main attraction.
