Malaysia's national railway operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) have successfully conducted a trial run of the cross-border “MySawasdee” tourist train, ahead of its planned operation by the end of 2025.
According to a statement from the governor of Thailand’s railway authority, the test run took place between Padang Besar and Surat Thani from September 21 to 23, marking an important step toward enhancing rail tourism and strengthening ties between the two neighboring nations. The test focused on key technical elements such as platform clearances, coach height, wheel spacing, and braking systems, ensuring safety standards were met before regular operations begin.
Additionally, both railway companies agreed during the 43rd KTMB–SRT Joint Conference joint conference in August to finalize a framework for regular service starting around December 2025.
The trial was conducted with a train hauled by a Thai locomotive along the Padang Besar-Surat Thani route, with the train returning on September 23. Key technical aspects such as the clearance between the train and platforms, wheel spacing, coach height, and braking systems were tested to ensure compliance with safety standards. This is in preparation for starting of regular service
Plans are also in motion to conduct another trial along the Bangkok–Butterworth route. In preparation for the official launch, a three-car test train will be operated on the Bangkok-Padang Besar line.
The extension of the “MySawasdee” service to Surat Thani is expected to provide passengers with a new travel experience, offer more travel options, stimulate economic activity, and strengthen the cultural and social bonds between Thailand and Malaysia. Currently, the “MySawasdee” train runs on holidays along the Kuala Lumpur-Hatyai route.
