Perdana Botanical Gardens is Kuala Lumpur’s largest and oldest public park, opening in 1889 as a recreational spot for the British during the colonial era. Covering 220 acres in the city center, this botanical garden offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur. The park features a children’s playground, jogging paths, exercise stations, rowing boats, and a variety of outdoor sculptures. The 91.6-hectare site includes several attractions, such as an orchid garden with over 800 orchid species, a butterfly park with more than 6,000 butterflies, and the KL Bird Park, home to over 3,000 birds.
The Orchid Garden is a peaceful spot to admire vibrant tropical flowers surrounded by beautifully landscaped greenery. Located opposite the KL Bird Park within the scenic Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, the Orchid Garden offers a floral haven where visitors can enjoy the orchids and learn tips on how to grow these stunning flowers.
The KL Bird Park, situated within the tranquil Lake Gardens, is home to more than 3,000 birds from around 200 species. Its unique feature is the free-flight concept in Zones 1, 2, and 3, where birds roam freely in aviaries that mimic their natural habitats. This environment allows the birds to breed naturally in a setting closely resembling the wild.
The Hibiscus Park showcases various species of Malaysia's national flower, the Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis. The park features a 4-meter high waterfall, pools, fountains, and a colonial-style building that has been converted into an exhibition hall with a tearoom and gallery.
The Herbarium of Perdana Botanical Garden holds collections of flowering and fruiting plants from the garden and forests across Peninsular Malaysia. These collections are documented in the BRAHMS (Botanical Research and Herbarium Management System) database.
The Sunken Garden is a beautifully designed parterre garden featuring Acalypha siamensis, Loropetalum chinense shrubs, and flowering annuals on the slopes. The addition of Grecian pots filled with colorful petunias enhances the garden’s charm. Several amenities are available, including gazebos for visitors to rest and enjoy the scenic views, which also make perfect photo opportunities.
The National Monument, located on a hill, is a war memorial with fountains, lighting, and a lush garden. The monument offers a stunning view of the city skyline, symbolizing the watchful presence of war heroes. It holds the record as the tallest freestanding bronze sculpture group in the world.
Just outside the Lake Gardens, the National Planetarium provides an interesting look into Malaysia’s space exploration ambitions. Dedicated to science and astronomy, it’s a fun and educational experience for children to learn about the planet and the universe. Visitors can even try the “space ball” ride, which simulates the intense G-forces of reentry.
The KL Deer Park, spanning 2 hectares, is home to several species of deer, including the smallest hoofed animal in the world, the mousedeer (chevrotain). Other species include fallow deer, axis deer, and sambar deer. The park is designed with optimal viewing points and fences, ensuring visitors can see the animals clearly while strolling through the lush surroundings.
