The Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, a 4-kilometer rail project, is poised to significantly improve connectivity between Malaysia and Singapore. Once operational, this Light Rail Transit (LRT) system will have a substantial capacity, capable of transporting up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction. Designed to integrate seamlessly with existing public transportation networks in both Johor Bahru and Singapore, the RTS Link offers a vital alternative to alleviate the persistent congestion at border crossings.

The project is progressing well and remains on track for completion by the end of this year. The majority of the physical infrastructure work has already been finalized, and the focus is now on the installation of the necessary RTS systems within the stations. The structural elements of the stations are complete, and the upcoming months will be dedicated to comprehensive testing procedures before the system can begin operations. Trains are currently undergoing testing on tracks in Johor Bahru, suggesting a smooth progression toward the anticipated completion date. The target is to launch operations in January 2027.

A new parliamentary bill is to be introduced in the upcoming Malaysian Parliament session. This legislation is essential to enable joint border controls, facilitating a single location for customs, immigration, and quarantine services. This would allow Singaporean officers to operate at Bukit Chagar and Malaysian officers at Woodlands North, a crucial aspect of bilateral cooperation that will significantly contribute to the RTS Link's operational effectiveness.

Furthermore, the development around Bukit Chagar is envisioned to mirror the integrated design seen in Hong Kong’s Central district. The plan involves pedestrian walkways connecting surrounding buildings to JB Sentral, bridging the nearly 300-meter gap between the two locations to ensure ease of access to buses and trains. This integrated approach is intended to enhance the overall passenger experience and connectivity.
