RTS Link which will soon connect Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and Singapore is designed to ease congestion at the Causeway. The service anticipates launching by early 2027. Projected single trip fares are expected to range between S$5 and S$7 (roughly US$3.95 to US$5.50), likely exceeding the cost of Kuala Lumpur's public transport but still proving less expensive than driving a car to Singapore. The Singapore government is not planning to subsidize fares and the Malaysia government is also not planning to subsidize Singapore commuters, making options like monthly passes or discounts unlikely. These RTS Link fares are being determined by RTS Operations, a joint venture between Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and SMRT Corporation. Currently, revenue from tolls collected on cars entering Malaysia provides significant support to the Johor state government. At the same time, Singapore's Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fees for foreign-registered cars and motorcycles will rise sharply in January 2027, eliminating the previous free days and hours.
The new RTS Link system aims for a remarkably quick travel time of just five minutes, achieved through a single-clearance process, and further expedited by AI-enabled gates that will allow clearance in approximately seven seconds. The RTS Link system is designed to handle over 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with each train carrying over 600 passengers. To ensure smooth operation, Malaysian Immigration officers working in Singapore will receive legal protections, with reciprocal protections being extended to Singaporean officers working in Malaysia. Specific fare details and concession options remain to be announced later in 2026. The first RTS Link train arrived in Woodlands, Singapore for demonstration on February 4.
