Malaysia is the ASEAN chair for 2025 and will host the ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on May 26 and 27. Due to this, numerous major highways and roads will be closed from May 23-28 to accommodate the movements of heads of state and their convoys. This will likely resemble the situation when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited last month, but with even more convoys involved.
Hundreds of traffic police officers will be on duty during this period. Their tasks will include escorting VVIP motorcades and managing traffic. A dry run will take place on May 21-22 to ensure smooth operations. Commercial vehicles will be prohibited from entering the city center during peak hours, and any vehicles parked improperly will be towed. Public cooperation is essential to prevent traffic disruptions caused by poorly parked vehicles.
Road closures will be in effect from 8 AM to 8 PM, affecting routes to the Kuala Lumpur city center, KLIA, Subang Air Force Base, KLCC, Istana Negara, and hotels hosting foreign delegates. Malaysia took over the ASEAN Chairmanship from Laos, with the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability,’ reflecting the country’s goal of fostering a united and prosperous ASEAN. Due to the many road closures and traffic diversions, higher traveling times on the road are to be expected. Thus it will be a good idea to utilize public transportation such as the LRT or MRT if you have any matters to attend to in the area.
